Anatomy of a Shutter

Basic Terminology

1.

Control Rod
(Tilt Rod)

The upright strip of wood used to operate working louvers. Faux tilt rods can also be applied.

2.

Louver

The individual fixed or movable horizontal slats of the shutter.

3. Rail The top or bottom horizontal piece of a shutter or a door.
4. Raised Panel The inside of the frame has solid panels that are outset or "raised" from the panel surface. The outer edges of the raised part of the panel are typically routed into an ogee or other shape.
5. Stiles Joinery pieces that are the vertical structure of a shutter or a door
