Choosing the Wood

Choosing high-quality decay-resistant wood is a huge factor in exterior shutter construction. While we build our shutters (and recommend) Clear Western Red Cedar, we are happy to offer other wood species such as Pine, Mahogany, Cypress and Spanish Cedar. If you are interested in a wood other than Western Red Cedar, please give us a call and we’ll be happy to work up a quote for you.

Cedar (Clear Western Red Cedar)

Though Pine is a decent wood to use for shutters, Cedar is far superior. Cedar is a more robust wood that will ultimately last longer than Pine. We use Western Red for our all our shutter styles (love that smell!) because the soft red-brown timber is valued for its resistance to decay, it’s light weight and has one of the lowest expansion rates of any material. It is extensively used for outdoor construction in the form of posts, decking, shingles, siding, and so forth.

Extira

At Wood Shutters Direct, we offer 4 different styles of Raised Panel shutters. Two of our styles are made with, or entirely out of a material called Extira®. Extira panels are a revolutionary new-to-the-world material that is truly unique.

A few benefits of Extira are:

• Extira is a panel product that resists moisture, rot and termites and offers excellent performance in exterior environments.
• Treated with zinc borate and manufactured with phenolic resins.
• One piece solid substrate - not laminated.
• No added urea formaldehyde.
• Made using sustainable materials and contributes to industry green building programs.
* Extira panels can be used in any non-structural paint-grade e application. They also work well for high moisture interior environments.

Additional Woods

Again, we are happy to do special orders with other woods, including hardwood, but these take longer as we do not keep a full hard wood inventory stock. Call us and we will be happy to assist you with pricing and availability information for other wood types such as Cypress, Oak, Redwood etc...

OK, now that you’ve chosen your style, it's time to take the measurements. You can view or download our How to Measure page and then return to our quote & order page.
